Wellington 2021 build

Wellington 2021

Our semi-detached build on Wellington St. W. is officially complete! Our 13th Habitat Homeowner, Samantha, and her two children are all moved into their very own home.

A Dedication Ceremony was held on Saturday, October 30th where Board Chair, Frank Bentrovato, handed the keys over to the family. Media, sponsors, volunteers, and staff came by to tour the home and congratulate the family.

“Now I feel like we are moving into a different phase of life, where I am more established in my career, I know what I want to do in life, the kids are going to be teenagers soon and becoming more independent,” said Samantha. “I feel like getting this house at this time is perfect for us.”

Samantha and her family completed 500 volunteer hours before moving into their Habitat Home and will be paying an affordable mortgage on the home.

The next-door unit is also completed and the successful applicant family should be announced within the next month.

We have many folks to thank for the success of this build, including:

Habitat is looking ahead to its next project, a single-family accessible home to be built at 23 Blake Street. Habitat hopes to break ground in the spring or summer of 2022, with a family moving in by the year’s end.

Volunteer with Habitat!

Are you looking for a meaningful way to spend your free time? Would you like to be part of a fun, friendly, and diverse team?

Now is a great time to submit an application to volunteer at the Habitat ReStore!

We’re currently looking for help in the Donation Centre, on the sales floor, on the truck, and with cleaning tasks!

Common tasks we need help with include inventory and pricing, donation processing, repairs and testing, pick-ups and deliveries, customer service, merchandising, cleaning, and so much more!

Volunteer positions can be short-term (such as high school students looking to complete their hours) or long-term (such as retirees looking to give back to their community).

Apply in-store at 32 White Oak Drive East or online at https://habitatsault.ca/volunteer/ today! If you would like more information, email info@habitatsault.ca

National Housing Day (Nov 22)

Each year, National Housing Day is held on November 22. It’s a day to recognize the important work done by housing partners to improve access to housing for everyone in Canada.

Now, more than ever, National Housing Day is an opportunity to reflect on the work that still needs to be done. As our communities recover from the pandemic, we need to ensure that everyone in Canada has access to affordable and equitable housing.

To support our mission and help us build a future where everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home, please donate at:

Giving Tuesday (Nov 30)

Giving Tuesday is a global movement for giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday.

The “Opening day of the giving season,” it’s a time when charities, companies, and individuals join together and rally for favourite causes. In the same way that retailers take part in Black Friday, the giving community comes together for #GivingTuesday.

How to Participate:

Donate to Habitat at No Frills (Nov 7 – 20)

From Sunday, November 7 to Saturday, November 20, you can donate to Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie & Area while you’re getting your groceries at Joe & Janice’s No Frills!

Every single dollar donated stays right here in Sault Ste. Marie, helping local families build brighter futures through affordable homeownership.

Help us continue building a future where everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home – donate to Habitat at No Frills (519 Korah Road) during your next visit.

What can I donate to the Habitat ReStore?

Great question! While every donation can help raise funds for our Affordable Homeownership Program, there are some items we, unfortunately, can’t accept.

Donating these items can cost Habitat for Humanity time and money, so be sure to check this list before dropping them off!

Items we CAN accept:

  • Appliances & electronics (working or not!)
  • Antiques
  • Bathtubs
  • Household batteries
  • Cabinets & moldings
  • Decor
  • Furniture
  • Flooring, doors, & windows
  • Lighting fixtures
  • Sinks & plumbing fixtures
  • Lumber (clean with no nails)
  • New toilets
  • Tools & hardware
  • Seasonal items
  • Scrap metal
  • Outdoor items

Items we CANNOT accept:

  • Ripped, damaged, or stained furniture
  • Mattresses & box springs
  • Baby items/baby furniture
  • Used toilets
  • Soft goods (clothing, bed linens, towels, shoes, etc.)
  • MDF or pressboard furniture
  • Used cleaning products
  • Paint (new & used)
  • Books & magazines
  • Pianos & organs

Please don’t dump your donation!

Drop off your donations from Monday to Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. when staff/volunteers are here. Dropping off your donation outside of business hours leaves it out in the weather – turning it into garbage.

Still not sure about what to donate?

Give us a call at (705) 941-9646.

We’re happy to chat about your donation! We even offer free pick-ups!
