Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie & Area is pleased to announce that they will be receiving assistance from Sault College students in the planning stages of a future build site on Goulais Avenue.
Sault College is offering its first Capstone Design Project for the second-year Civil Engineering Technician Students for the 2020/2021 school year. As many co-op positions were suspended due to the onset of COVID-19 last spring, this is a unique way to ensure students experience a simulation of the real-world work experience in this profession.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with Sault College and to work with brilliant young minds like Jacob and Hayden for the betterment of our community. These types of projects help students to develop skills that are practical for their future career aspirations, but they also help Habitat to keep costs low. Our mission wouldn’t be possible without these kinds of partnerships and Sault College has provided us with great support over the years, ” states Katie Blunt, Executive Director.
Pictured in the above photo are students Jacob Brongo, Hayden Rollin-Taylor, as well as Professor/Coordinator of the Civil Engineering Technician Program Marc Pilon, P.Eng. Jacob and Hayden will be assisting Habitat for Humanity for their 2020/2021 Capstone Design Project in planning for the upcoming 2022 Habitat Build at 661 Goulais Avenue.
“It is very exciting to link our students and particularly their Capstone Design Project with a great organization like Habitat for Humanity. I have worked with Habitat on their past few builds and these projects are always the highlight of our year as they bring housing to families in need. Many times as Engineers our projects never make it off of paper; however, when we get the opportunity to work with Habitat we know there is always the finish line in sight and it is always for a good cause,” states Marc Pilon, P.Eng.
The Goulais Avenue property was generously donated by Soo Mill Buildall.
“Soo Mill and the Hollingsworth family have always prided themselves on supporting community-based initiatives. Habitat’s mission is something that dovetails well with what we as a company can do to help impact our community in a positive and lasting manner. Habitat’s motto of ‘Giving a hand up and not a hand out’ has proven to be a winning long-term strategy throughout North America. Our goal is to continue to support Habitat moving forward and openly welcome other businesses to participate in any way they are able,” states SooMill President, Randy Aikens.
The donated land is a large property that can accommodate approximately five homes – a first of its size for Habitat. The property is a perfect location for families. It is conveniently located along a bus route in the city’s west end and is within walking distance of schools, community centres, and more.
