Committee Volunteer Opportunities

MANDATE OF COMMITTEE:
There shall be a fundraising committee which works to carry out HFHSSMA’s vision by providing assistance in planning, coordination, and execution of fundraising and public relations activities that contribute to the Affordable Homeownership Program.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND REQUIREMENTS:
The chair of the fundraising committee reports to the Executive Director. The committee passes motions for recommendation to the Executive Director for consideration and approval. The committee does not have the right, power, or obligation to make decisions on behalf of HFHSSMA.
COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assisting in public relations efforts, fund development, and the annual fundraising plan which is consistent with the HFHSSMA’s Strategic Plan;
- The Committee will collaborate with staff for public relations by:
- Identifying opportunities that may strengthen HFHSSMA’s public relations profile;
- Attending and participating in events with staff where appropriate; and,
- Promoting HFHSSMA as a leader in affordable homeownership and a solution to the housing crisis.
- The Committee will collaborate with staff for fund development and fundraising by:
- Promoting HFHSSMA’s fundraising events;
- Recruiting donors by identifying and facilitating introductions, and where appropriate, attending prospect meetings with people, businesses, and government officials;
- Retaining donors by identifying opportunities for, and participating in, recognition and appreciation activities;
- Developing funds by identifying grant opportunities and participating in the development and/or review of grant applications;
- Identifying, developing and executing signature fundraising events, and where requested, organizing one signature event per year as a volunteer committee;
- Promoting HFHSSMA as the top choice for third-party (community) fundraisers; and,
- Exploring the feasibility of alternative forms of giving such as legacy/estate, regular interval, sponsorships, etc. in collaboration with staff; and,
- Performing other duties which may from time to time be assigned to the fundraising committee by the Executive Director.
LIMITATIONS:
In contributing to the committee's discharging of its duties under this mandate, each member of the committee shall be obliged only to exercise the care, diligence and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable circumstances. Nothing in this mandate is intended, or may be construed, to impose on any member of the committee a standard of care or diligence that is in any way more onerous or extensive than the standard to which all committee members are subject. The essence of the committee's duties is to gain reasonable assurance (but not to ensure) that the fundraising policies, procedures and practices of HFHSSMA are being conducted effectively and in compliance with all applicable laws, statutes and regulations; are reasonable and appropriate in the circumstances given the nature of the organization and its strategy; and are sufficiently and accurately reported upon to the Executive Director.
MEMBERSHIP:
The fundraising committee is an operational committee with a minimum of three and a maximum of eight members which may be comprised of both board directors, staff and members in good standing as constituted and specified in the By-laws. Committee members serve one-year with an option to renew at the discretion of the Executive Director in consultation with the committee chair. Committee members will be chosen by the Executive Director. The chair of the committee, which will be a volunteer member, will be chosen by the Executive Director. The committee chair is responsible for onboarding new committee members. Committee members must attend a minimum of 50 percent of scheduled meetings to maintain membership. All committee members by virtue of their involvement with families and potentially vulnerable individuals, are required to submit a police vulnerable sector check and a signed Post – Employment Offence Declaration Form every year thereafter. If committee members pass the check, they will be provided with a ReStore gift certificate for the expense of the check.

There shall be a family services committee which works to carry out HFHSSMA’s vision by identifying the population in need of decent, affordable housing, and by implementing processes and policies for selecting those that meet the criteria of the Affordable Homeownership Program. Additionally, the committee will provide support to families until possession of the home and up to one-year post-occupancy.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS AND REQUIREMENTS:
The chair of the family services committee reports to the Executive Director. The committee passes motions for recommendation to the Executive Director for consideration and approval. The committee does not have the right, power, or obligation to make decisions on behalf of HFHSSMA.
COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assisting in the promotion and execution of the Affordable Homeownership Program which is consistent with the HFHSSMA’s Strategic Plan.
- The Committee will collaborate with staff for family selection on the following:
- Promoting the Affordable Homeownership Program;
- Reviewing applications;
- Conducting home visits for potential future homeowners;
- Communicating to the application process, selection criteria and selection process to potential families;
- Maintaining an objective, legal and non-discriminatory selection process;
- Maintaining confidentiality; and,
- The Committee will collaborate with staff for family support on the following:
- Maintaining open two-way communications and being available throughout the Affordable Homeownership Program;
- Coordinating homeowner training sessions with relevant staff and community organizations;
- Communicating the partnership responsibilities to families and ensuring that families understand their responsibilities;
- Maintaining confidentiality; and,
- Performing other duties which may from time to time be assigned to the family services committee by the Executive Director.
