Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie and Area (HFHSSMA) is a community based non-profit organization that relies on our volunteers daily to help us carry out our vision of providing safe, decent and affordable housing to hardworking families in our community. We could not do what we do without the generous commitment of our many volunteers.

There are several opportunities to volunteer with HFHSSMA including at our ReStore, on our builds, in the Affiliate office, joining a committee or our Board of Directors.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with HFHSSMA, there are just a few things we need to get you started! Please complete a Volunteer Application found below. We look forward to working together to make a stronger, healthier and happier community! Building Homes. Building Hope.

On January 31, 2018, Danny Rae left this world. Dan was a beloved volunteer and dear member of Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie & Area.  He was fearless in his mission to share his passion to fight for families living in substandard housing. Dan was a warrior for this cause.  His weapons were his faith, mortar, hammer, wood, nails and his never-ending dedication to Habitat’s mission.  He believed change would come about using an army of volunteers and supporters both financial and spiritual. As an advocate, he never hesitated to speak to anyone who would listen about Habitat for Humanity, explaining what our needs were in order to provide safe, decent and affordable homes for families, making our community stronger, safer and healthier.  He was a tireless champion of Habitat for Humanity and the families it served.

Dan’s Habitat adventure started when a group of people saw a need and joined together to form a coalition to bring Habitat to Sault Ste. Marie. Once incorporated as Habitat for Humanity Sault Ste. Marie & Area, Dan became the Chair of the Board of Directors. Under Dan’s leadership Habitat acquired its first office space and ten thousand dollars in funding to initiate construction of Sault Ste. Marie’s first Habitat Home.

Under Dan’s leadership, the Affiliate built homes for 3 families and Dan continued to be involved with several additional homes. His vision to build homes and provide a “hand up - not a hand out” made Dan a hero to the families who worked alongside him as they constructed their first home with pride and dignity while changing their lives forever!

Over the years Dan served on the Board of Directors and on several committees: fundraising, family services, nominating and Restore to name a few, but his passion remained with construction and its committee.  He volunteered alongside students from the Trades and Skills programs at St. Mary’s and Sault Colleges, where he and other volunteers shared a wealth of knowledge and experience.  One student in particular, who now owns his own successful construction business, remembers Dan’s impact by paying forward his company’s services on Habitat builds.

Always waiting for the “next build,” you could often find Dan renovating, repairing and improving wherever he was needed.  As our affiliate matured, he was instrumental in bringing “Habitat RV Care-A-Vanners” (a group of volunteers who travel North America to help build Habitat homes) to the Sault to assist with our build projects.  Dan participated in the creation of a Health and Safety Program, a Design Criterion Plan for future home builds and the formation of the Habitat Restore.  In later years, Dan served in an advisory role to both the Board of Directors and the Construction Committee while continuing to lend his expertise at the build site.  Throughout his involvement with, and for several years afterwards, Dan made regular financial contributions in support of Habitat for Humanity Canada and Habitat Sault Ste. Marie.

When asked what a HFHSSMA volunteer looks like this is what comes to mind - patient, motivated, brave, humble, compassionate, respectful, creative, flexible, independent, team player and a leader.  Dan Rae was this and more.  He was a visionary, a mentor, a friend to many, a man who loved life and his wife, and believed that home ownership could become a reality for those who could not otherwise afford a simple, decent, safe and affordable home, if we all work together to provide a hand up, not a hand out.

Like the “Master Carpenter”, Dan Rae went about his volunteerism never seeking external rewards or recognition, refusing to boast of his accomplishments or skills and always standing up for his beliefs should things appear inappropriate or unethical.  Like the Master Carpenter, he led by example, turning lumber and hope into a home.  His never-ending encouragement and enthusiasm made him one of Habitat’s most beloved volunteers.  Rest in peace, Mr. Rae, the positive impact you had on volunteers and our Habitat families will last for years to come.  The Master Carpenter welcomes you home.

"The Carpenter"
a poem by G.E. Nordell

There was once a master carpenter
and he lived a good life
for he loved to work, building things of wood.
He was loved by his family,
by his sons and his daughter,
and especially by his wife.
He was loved by everyone who knew him.

And at the end of that good life
when it came time for him to die
the old carpenter soared
into the white light of death –
for the white light is where the good souls go to.

And the white light warmed him and
nurtured him and
fed him great peace.

And when this carpenter arrived in heaven
he was expected and
immediately he was put to work:
for the Pearly Gates
were a bit loose
and St. Peter's desk
had a couple of drawers that stuck.
And before long
the old master carpenter
began to build
a new throne
for God.
